Temple of Heaven Overview

A comprehensive guide to the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Beijing's most iconic landmarks.

The Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece of Chinese architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty, it was where emperors prayed for good harvests and is famous for its Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

Covering an area of 273 hectares, the Temple of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings set in beautiful gardens. It is renowned for its exquisite architecture, including the iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests with its circular blue-tiled roof, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven.

The temple complex is divided into two main parts: the Inner Altar and the Outer Altar. The most famous structures are located in the Inner Altar, including the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar.

Recommended Tour Route

The Temple of Heaven is best explored by following a route that covers the main religious structures and gardens. Start at the Southern Gate and proceed north through the Outer Altar to the Inner Altar.

Key attractions include the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the most iconic building with its circular blue-tiled roof, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar, where emperors performed sacrifices to heaven.

Don't miss the Echo Wall, a circular wall that allows sound to travel along its surface, and the Three Echo Stones, where you can experience acoustic effects.

Reservation Information
  • Book tickets online through the official website or search for "天坛" (Temple of Heaven) in WeChat mini program
  • Tickets can also be purchased at the entrance, but advance booking is recommended to avoid long queues.
Transportation
  • Metro: Take Line 5 to Tiantan East Gate Station (Exit A) or Line 8 to Tiantan South Gate Station (Exit C)
  • Taxi: Directly to the Southern Gate or Eastern Gate of Temple of Heaven
